Novel Study

Hey everyone!

This term we had to do yet again another novel study!
This time I was recommended the book 'Goodnight Mister Tom' Written by Michelle Magorian.
I found the book to be very eye opening, emotional, and filled with amazingly described setting and character descriptions.
This book is set during WW2 in and near London, and tells the story of William Beech; a 9 year old boy evacuated from his home with his mentally ill mother to a small town called Little Weirwood.
William was a very deprived child but soon flourished under the care of his new guardian Mister Tom Oakley.
I strongly invite you to come and make friends with William, experience the fun and hardships he faces during that time in his life.
It will be well worth it!

Moving on to the activities I had to do in connection with this book; everything is presented on this google slide.
Please take a look and if you want recommend it to your teacher! (It is a fun creative way to learn!)

Sorry for the long post!😞

'Prototec Maths' Column Graph

Hello fellow Bloggers!
Today's post is about an awesome site called 'Prototec Basic Facts Maths'.
This site caters for stage 2-8 and is an excellent way to learn maths and also teach it!
Teachers can assist their students in working out equations to do with; decimals, percentages, fractions, times tables, addition, subtraction, and place value.
The tests are NOT TIMED so you can enjoy working at your own pace!
This site is worth trying! Click here to have a go yourself!

Moving on to the progress I have made using this site; my year 6-8 class (Rimu) has each created a column graph (see below) charting the results over last 6 weeks on Prototec.
We have finally completed this activity and were eager to show everyone the progress we have made!
I hope you all will take the time to look at this site and try it out for yourself!

See you next post!🤗😎😋

100 Word Challenge Week #9

I am back and writing 100 Word Challenges again!
The class took a bit of a break because we had events and stuff on, so this is my first one in about 5 weeks.

The prompt was to add ...as the smoke cleared... in our writing.
Please read and comment on my work!

The choking smoke stuck to my throat and soon poured into my lungs; it was stinging my eyes so that the only thing I could only see was the faint fuzzy outline of his body through the smoke and tears. The mans strong voice was slowly being drowned in piercing screams that were shattering my brain along with all the confusion.

I was spluttering everywhere; and as I dragged my leg forward to take my next step my body gave in to the pain and distress.

But that was not the end, as something was revealed as the smoke cleared.

We should all Travel!

Image result for kids speech clipart
Hi everyone, I'm sure most of you know that this Term is all about Speeches!

I struggled to come up with a topic and then struggled to write it, but with some help and google search I have managed to create an amazing speech about why we all should travel!

2 days ago on the 21st, a librarian came to our school to judge the top 3 in each year groups speeches.
I was chosen to be in the top 3 and came 2nd out of the Year 8's. (Yay!)

Have you written a speech?
Did you go to a speech compitition?
Have you won anything?

I'd like to know more about how your speeches went and also have those questions answered if you can!

See you next blog post!

Term 3 Time Table

Hi Bloggers, here is my timetable for Term 3:
Every Monday we sit down and plan what we do for the week using this google sheet.

I find it a very good way to learn how to become a 'Self Managing Learner' and also have voice in what I do at school.

If you have any questions about my timetable or this way of learning then feel free to ask me!

It's all about books!

Hey Bloggers, today is about novels!
That's right books!

For reading this term everyone in the class was instructed to do a novel study.
We could chose any way to present it eg; paper, google apps...ect.

I chose a simple google slide to present my novel study, so please have a look at what I have done:

(Please keep in mind that I am still adding some more photos.)

Thanks for taking a look, I hope you can take the time to comment, and maybe give me some pointers of what I can do better for future work!

What is 'Netiquette'?

Hi everyone,
Todays post is about Digital Etiquette; or Netiquette.

Do you know what Netiquette is?
Netiquette is the do's & dont's of online communication; or anything Digital really.

Watch this video which explains very clearly the do's & dont's of Digital Communication:

So... what do you think?
Have you been using Netiquette?

What were the main points highlighted in that video?
If we all use Netiquette the digital world will be a better safer place, and we will have a very clean and positive digital footprint.

Calling all bloggers... Welcome to A Special Quote!
This is a blog that my friend and I Bella have been working on since Week 3 this Term for the Digi Awards.

Digi Awards is a competition for kids, that gets them to chose from different categories and use your brain power to create and amazing digital presentation.
Every year there is a different theme to work of; this year the theme was to 'Be the Change'.

So with that introduction in mind please watch this brief Screencastify which give you a small tour around our blog:

So the video pretty much sums what we have done.
I encourage you to take a look at the link here: (Click Here) and also check out the Canterbury Digi Awards Site (Click Here) if you want to.

100 Word Challenge 'The Wonders of the forest'

Hey bloggers, I haven't been posting for a while which is bad on my part so I will make sure that I am regularly putting work up here for you guys to read!

Anyway here is my 100 WC for this week, the prompt is to write a story about this picture:
fireflies-long-exposure-photography-2016-japan-19
Please enjoy and comment! (^o^)

I took a wrong turn, but never will I regret it.

Being lost had never been so beautiful; magical, it was exquisite.
The trees were ignored, they were being engulfed in beauty, by the wonders of the forest.

The night was lite up, I could feel the vibration of the hum that they put out.
Like a sign that they were expecting my presence.

I was being recognized, I just knew it.
They enjoyed my being there.
But why then, was this so confusing

It all seemed inhuman, they were small elegant lights, dancing in night.

What a lucky turn.

Port Hills Hike - Haiku Poem

Hey, my post today is about a kind of poem called a Haiku.
This google slide will give you a brief explanation about what a Haiku is and also contains one that I wrote about the Port Hill Hike that my class did for the William Pike Challenge.

So... what do you think?
Could you create one of your own?
An easy trick to find how many syllables are in a word is to say... it... like... a... ro...bot!

Please comment and add your Haiku to show me, (if you are up to the task!)

My Mid Term Evaluation Prezi

Hi, this My Mid Year Reflection Prezi, it talks about what I have achieved up till now and includes links that lead to posts or other D.L.O's that I have created to show my work.

We are making these for our Student Leader Conferences which are coming up soon, to give our family some idea of what we have been up to.

I invite you to take a look and also use Prezi which is a great learning tool to share presentations.

100 Word Challenge - Unjustly Imprisoned

The 100 Word Challenge Prompt for this for this week is writing about this photo, which is a cell in Alcatraz Prison off the coast of San Fransico in the US.

We were told to consider these questions:
Why would you be put in this cell?
How does it feel to be locked up?
Is it possible to escape?
Could you think of a plan?
What is special about Alcatraz?

Here is my 100 Word Challenge:
I gave up; my body was physically drained from continuous crying, and my stomach ached from curving over.
But no one cared.

I let the distress come.
Being unjustly imprisoned was beyond anything I had ever experienced, or could handle. Innocence was all that I fought for, but now my fight is with freedom.

Agony and self pity took over, horrible thoughts filled my head, traveling so fast that they collided and nightmares were all that could be made.

I pushed my tear stained face further into the musty sheets, as the anger built up inside of me was released.

William Pike Challenge; Rock Climbing Adventure!

When writing this recount, we were asked to focus on one thing: Starting our sentences in an interesting way, like using time connectives or more advanced openers that leads to more descriptive writing.
How do you think I went?

William Pike Challenge; Rock Climbing Recount

William pike.jpgAt the age of 22, William Pike; a mountaineer climber, lost his leg on Mt Ruapehu due to a volcano erupting without warning. As a result he had trouble doing many things, and during that time he lost his confidence.

The William Pike Challenge is a program set up for year 7-9 kids that promotes love for the outdoors, and build qualities that will help them to succeed in whatever they may do.
To complete the William Pike Challenge you must do 20 hours of Community Service, 20 Hours of a chosen Hobby, and the minimum of 6 Outdoor Activities that your school organises, over the period of year.
Definitely a challenge!

My class has completed our 2nd outdoor activity, where we spent the whole Monday, the 20th of June, rock climbing at Cattlestop Crag, at the top of Mt Pleasant Rd in the Port Hills of Christchurch.
Arriving at the top of the hill, we were all exposed to the harsh cold wind, and very soon all of our jackets came out of our bags.

After our instructors Josh and Steve introduced themselves, we made our way in a single file line down the very narrow, and difficult mountain path track, past the abseiling rock and to the spot where we would climb for the day.
Here we were sheltered from the wind, and Josh talked to us about some safety rules before we could start.
IMG_0549.JPG
Soon we settled down, and after we got into our very uncomfortable harnesses, Steve chose 5 people to go all the way back to the abseiling rock (me… lol) to begin that activity.
The abseiling was definitely challenging for most people,  and really tested our courage and resilience to go all the way down.
IMG_0728.JPGThese qualities are ones that you build whilst doing the William Pike Challenge, and will help us to face life with pride and ambition.

Anyway, abseiling is basically what you do when you come down from climbing up the rock, except this rock we didn’t climb up, but instead we were abseiling down over a vertical edge, not straight down like you would on the other ones.

I was the last to abseil, and the reality of going over a vertical edge which overlooks a massive slope down one of the Port hills in Christchurch, hit me when I realised that it was now my turn.
IMG_0784.JPGI definitely didn't want to show my concern! And the pressure was on because everyone was now at the bottom, but I managed to succeed and conquered the abseiling rock! At the end I was proud, another quality that was built up during that activity.

With much caution we made it back to the rock climbing walls where people were already going up.
It was great fun to watch and cheer them on, but it was more fun when it was your turn, and you had to scour the face of the rock to find hidden ledges and holes to use to pull yourself up with!

I made it my goal without realizing, to reach the top of all the faces that I started to climb; I managed to accomplish that goal, and successfully touched all the metal brackets where the top of the rope was attached to.
IMG_0762.JPG

At the end of the day I felt satisfied, tired, and also extremely sore! All in all I am glad that I was able to learn and experience more of the qualities like courage, resilience, and pride during this William Pike Challenge Outdoor Activity!

100 Word Challenge Week 22

The Prompt this week is to add the 5 words Airplane, Yellow, Violin, Eaten, and Swept

Flight 556 was called for the final time at Amsterdam airport and then the airplane, bound for London, disappeared into the majestic white clouds.

Packed inside the small baggage compartment above the seats, sat the little yellow suitcase carrying the small vintage violin.

David sat relaxed in the middle row of the plane. He had just eaten a wonderful meal.

Staring at the air hostess who swept the isle floor, he thought about his daughter that would soon meet him at the airport.

He couldn't wait to see her face when he gives her the gift she has always wanted.

NZ HERO Project Presented in a Matchbox

Around two weeks ago, our teacher Miss Blair gave us the task to research about a NZ HERO and perest the information in a match box.

I did my HERO Project on a World Famous Kite Maker Peter Lynn.
Here is a slideshow that I prepared my notes on, this contains all of the information in my matchbox!
Please comment if you find this interesting, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed learning about it.

Technology Subject Change Over

Every Thursday morning at Yaldhurst Model School the bus arrives at 8:20 a.m to take us Year 7 & 8's to Lincoln Primary School for Technology/Manual.

This year we have 5 subjects, Cooking, Hard Materials, 3D Printing/Design, Textiles, and Science, we have 8 weeks at each subject.
We had a change over for the third time this year and now am in Textiles/Sewing.

Yesterday was our first lesson in sewing and for some of us who have never touched a sewing machine before it was kind of confusing, but I guess that's what the lessons are for so that we can learn and get better at it.

Have you ever done any of these subjects?
Can you sew?

I almost forgot, we have to create something of our own choice to sew in sewing, I'm really stuck on ideas and would appreciate some advice from you guys!
Please comment and give me some inspiration, maybe a photo or something would be really helpful!
