William Pike Challenge Award - Dinner Night

William Pike Challenge Award Night- Recount:

On the 18th of March 2016, the year 7 & 8s of Rimu Class gathered into the extremely crowded staffroom. We were waiting there because all of our parents were in the classroom,  listening to Miss Blair talk about how this year is going to run.

While they were talking, us students were making sure that tea was ready and everything was in place.
We had to creep into the class quietly so that the adults didn’t notice us, but I think they heard us anyway!
(Parents always hear you!)

Tea was awesome!
All of our hard work that we put into making it payed off!
We prepared it as sort of a buffet, and there was more than enough food!
The best things there were the spider drinks!
Ice cream and fizzy! YUM!!!

Afterwards all of us gathered into the Whare hui or Assembly Hall, and listened to William Pikes inspirational story, about how he lost his leg on a mountain expedition with his friend, survived, and still thinks and lives by his saying “all pasion no limits.”
He showed us pictures on a slide to accompany his speech.
Some were of his leg that got crushed from rocks and depre when the mountain he was climbing exploded. They were gross!

He also told us about the birth of The William Pike Challenge, and how the number of schools have grown from 4 to 60!

By the time it was all over it was like 8:30 pm.
We helped pack up a little bit and them went home!
It was a great night!

‘Wonder’ - First Person Point of View-Essay:

Last week my class was given the task of writing a short essay, explaining about how the book by R.J Palacio, ‘Wonder’ was written.  We had to use examples from the book and also our own opinions. We are reading this book as a class, and all enjoy it!
Here is my short essay:

My thoughts are that R.J. Palacio has used first person writing the book Wonder, but sometimes August has related scenes in third person.

As evidence to back this statement, throughout the book examples like this are written:
“I think about it a lot” I said. Pg 128
Notice how the words ‘I’ and ‘think’ are used, not he and  thought.
This shows that he is doing it.

Furthermore, if we look at other parts of the book, August tells us about things that have happened. Like when August searched for the phrase his dad used when he referred to him as ‘a lamb to the slaughter’. He says:
‘I googled it last night.’ Chp 16, Pg 43
Not googling, but he ‘googled’.
This shows that he had done it.

So this is why I believe that R.J. Palacio has written the book wonder in first person, along with third.
